About
Marcus Mrowka
President, Victura Strategies
After more than two decades leading communications efforts for state and national organizations, I launched Victura Strategies to help leaders, schools, nonprofits, and unions better tell their stories and reach their communications goals.
I take a relationship-based approach to understanding your goals and develop strategies that are authentic to your voice and organization and targeted to your key audiences.
I've served as Senior Communications Director for the American Federation of Teachers, Director of Communications for the Maine Department of Education, Vice President and Communications Director for the Roosevelt Institute, and National Media Director for the Service Employees International Union. Through these experiences, I worked with the leaders of those organizations to drive effective communications strategies, lead and reshape communications departments and brands, and help leaders reach their goals. I also worked directly with educators and union members to help them develop and share their stories and understand the power of their voices in influencing policy and public opinion.
At the Roosevelt Institute, I led a comprehensive rebrand and worked with Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and other thought leaders on progressive economic policy. These efforts to raise the profile and influence of the Institute led to a New York Times Magazine profile of Roosevelt’s work and our groundbreaking Rewriting the Rules report launched with Senator Elizabeth Warren was published as a book.
When I started at AFT, public approval for teachers’ unions was incredibly low, with even progressives often saying they support unions except for the teachers’ union. Through aggressive communications efforts to showcase how teachers and their unions were fighting for the strong public schools that parents and communities want, we shifted public opinion. But we faced additional rocky seas, effectively fighting back against attacks by Betsy DeVos and other anti-public education forces and for an agenda that supports teachers and students.
At SEIU, I led a program called Walk a Day in My Shoes, challenging candidates from school board to president to spend a day walking in the shoes of a janitor, healthcare worker, or public service employee to understand their lived experiences and help inform their policy agenda. I also worked on financial reform issues, calling out the excesses of Wall Street following the 2008 financial crisis, working with bank teller whistleblowers to expose predatory bank practices, and pushing for financial reform legislation, including the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
I live in a small coastal Maine town with my two dogs and I've served on my local school board since 2000. I'm currently Chair of the Five Town Community School District School Board.
I look forward to working with you!
